Bandhani Dupattas

View as

Bandhani (Hindi: बांधानी) is an ancient form of textile design that traces its roots to over 5000 years ago. The term `Bandhani` has been derived from the word `Bandhan`or “Bandhana” that literally means to tie up.

Bits of fabric are pulled by the fingernails into many tiny bindings that are securely tied with thread at several points in the fabric. Based on the patterns the threads are secured and when untied, the fabric takes the form of an intricate and colorful design of dots of many sizes. Chandrakala, BavanBaug, and Shikari are some of the commonly known patterns in bandhani.

The earliest evidence of Bandhini can be traced to the Indus Valley civilization that practiced the art of dyeing cloth.  It is an ancient art practice that is native to the Indian states of Gujarat and Rajasthan. Bandhani is also known as Bandhej Saree, Bandhni, Piliya, and Chungidi in Tamil and regional dialects.
