Patan Patola Dupatta

View as

A Patola is a two-weave double ikat sari, often made of silk, which has its origins in Patan, Gujarat, India. Patola is the plural form; the singular is patola. Touted to be extravagantly expensive, patolas were once a part of the trousseau of the aristocratic and royal families.

Traditionally there are only three families in Patan that are known to weave these sarees. It is said that the tradition of weaving these sarees is only passed on to the male heirs of the families who weave this piece of art.

These sarees are exclusive to Surat, Patan, and Ahmedabad in Gujarat. It can take anywhere between six months to a year to hand weave these sarees. A laborious process of dyeing each strand separately before weaving them together creates a masterpiece that can surely add grace to your saree collection.
